Mosaics
We visited Whitney, Will, Laura and Jesse for a few days before Thanksgiving and left them with a Mosaic pattern game. Then on to Utah and left 2 Mosaics for family to play with at Grandma and Grandpa's.
Whitney made a couple from the book then branched out to make her own design. Here is the first that she shared with us. Creative use of blank space greatly increases the possibilities. Hope you enjoy. When you visit Mom and Dad, try your own and send me some pictures.

Elder Maynes mentions Joseph Watson Maynes
Elder Maynes spoke Sunday morning in conference. He is third cousins to us so his dad is second cousin to Mom, Same relation as Josh and Catie's kids are to Laura and Jesse's kids for example.
He includes a short story from the life of his great grandfather, Joseph Watson Maynes. He was the just older brother of our great grandfather, John Alexander Maynes II (5th child and third son but named after his dad). (born 14 months apart)
Both brothers were part of the Mormon Tabernacle choir but before recording devices.
Both served missions back to England where they grew up. Joseph died in 1912 on his mission at the age of nearly 54 of a heart attack. John died in 1915 also on his mission in England at the age of 55. John had his wife and youngest daughter Dorothy with him on the mission. Here is a link to some pictures of him.
There seem to be lots of Maynes relatives who died in their mid 50's.
Mom's dad (John Alexander Maynes III) died in 1940 at age 57.

Using the Internet for Good
Here is an interesting article made by a recent (2009) convert, Al Fox. At the end she has a video where she writes and mails a letter to the Elders who taught her. One of them is probably a relative.
Here's a screen shot from her video.
A person(Seth Smith) in our ward in Pacifica also had an article about her. Here is that link.

Grandparenting
We had to try to spoil Will from a distance for his birthday!
But we had the chance to do it hands on with Elliot.
Lots of sleeping with a few small feedings.
Almost 12 hours away from Mom.
He got used to us but was happy when his parents came back.

Newest member of the family: Elise
Welcome! The newest member of our family, sharing the birthdate with Patti and Dad's sister Lee. She's the ninth of Mom and Dad's great grandkids.
Sharing the name with another of Dad's sisters, Elise.
Elise standing directly in front of her step-mother Elsie. Dad is just behind his dad, Ross. Picture taken about 1943. (Irene got married in Mar 1943, the youngest. Myrna would have been 7, Leola (now Lee) would have been 9 and Elise was 27).

Whitney Wins First Prize
Stay Curious Video Contest Winners
Thank you to everyone who participated in the Stay Curious
Video Contest! Forty-three very curious Ben Franklin Academy students
submitted videos, and five will be awarded prizes. We applaud every
student who chose to share his/her curiosity with us.
The prizes are as follows:
- First prize goes to Whitney ....., kindergartener, for the thoughtful and creative way she demonstrated her curiosity via Curiosity Theatre (Ã la Masterpiece Theatre). She queries how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, if a tree makes a sound in the forest when it falls, how much wood a woodchuck chucks and what types of creatures live in our local lakes. Whitney will receive two tickets to a professional Colorado sporting event and an iPod Shuffle.
- Ana Julia, first grader, takes second prize for her creative video inquiring about electricity. Ana has won two tickets to a professional Colorado sporting event.
- The third prizewinners are William and Aiva Titus, third and first graders, respectively, for starring in a well-thought out video about simple machines. The Titus family wins an iPod Shuffle.
- Mina Poleschook, first grade, takes fourth prize. She and her little sister showed their curiosity in wondering about kinetic force. Mina wins an iPod Shuffle.
- Fifth prize goes to Marissa Kersey, seventh grader, who is curious about global warming and chose to inquire about it in her Halloween costume. She also wins an iPod Shuffle.
The prizes awarded to the top five video winners are courtesy of Matt Krohl (professional Colorado sporting event tickets)
and 360 Media/Solie Swan (iPod Shuffles). Mr. Krohl and Mr. Swan are
both members of the Marketing Comittee; Mr. Swan serves as the
committee's chairman.
Ben Franklin Academy students have done an incredible job Staying Curious. Keep up the good work kids!

Memories Needed
I am going to be writing personal histories for my mom and brother, Clarence, but I want them to be as detailed and as complete as possible. I can't do that unless I get memories from anyone possible. Especially when it comes to my mom whom I only know the last decade of her life, but there is a good 30 years that I know pretty much nothing about. So I would really appreciate it if any of you could get me memories of either of them. I need them written up and some way of knowing who the memories are from and emailed to me if at all possible.
