Even Bigger Family

One interesting thing about family history is that you can easily generate a very large number of ancestors, even if you don't know names for them. One way around the problems of records is to use Molecular Genealogy. This is a very interesting project. The Sorenson Molecular Genealogy Foundation (SMGF) has an ongoing free project to add DNA samples correlated to family trees to their database that can then be searched by genetic markers. Their website has some interesting discussion about what Molecular Genealogy is and stories on how it has been used.

There is a McGee branch already listed descending from Solon Huff McGee. I added mine but it doesn't show up yet.

The more that participate, the better the statistical data becomes.

Bigger Family

Our family comes from a long list of interesting people. Some of those families have larger organizations as well. Like this one that was highlighted in a recent Church News.

Joseph Knight Family Organization

The web site has a brief history of the original family and a place to register as a descendent. Joseph Knight Sr. is my 4th Great Grand Father, through his daughter Anna, so you can adjust your relationship from there. They were the original Colesville branch of the Church.

Subscribe to this blog!

Does everyone know how to subscribe to a feed? If you have a newer version of Internet Explorer, there's an orange icon near the top right of your browser, next to the "home" icon. Click on it and you'll be taken to a page where you can click on, "Subscribe to this feed." It'll then save it in your Favorites. To access it again, click the yellow star near the top left of your browser, then click Feeds. Now you can easily check to see if there's a new post! Under Feeds, it should show "McGee Family Blog" in bold letters when there's a new post to look at. (If there's not a new post, it won't be bolded.)

Now, everbody subscribe so we can all know when there's a new post! :o) If you have a different kind of browser, you can comment with instructions for subscribing from that browser.

Another Introduction

I think Laura's idea for introductions is a great one, it gives everyone sort of a base understanding of where everyone is and what they are up to, so here goes for me. My name is Rachel. I am the middle child of John and Karen (meaning the third child). I went on a mission to Russia Samara and got back in December. Since then I have been at home in North Dakota. Just recently I returned to Provo, Utah to go back to BYU where I attended for three years before my mission. I am majoring in Linguistics and Russian and have about 2 years left before graduation. I guess that's it about me!

The Wolf Family . . . introduction

Since Laura started the introductions, I thought I'd add one for us. This is a picture of me and my husband Ross. Just a brief update, we moved to Klamath Falls about two years, bought a house and got a dog. We are active in our community and with the Youth and Choir. Just plugging along keeping busy but wanted to say hi.

A great website for good health

I wanted to share a website I've been using called SparkPeople.com. I used their sister site, Babyfit, while I was pregnant and now I'm using SparkPeople to lose the baby weight. It has tons of great resources, like a food tracker where you can enter the food you eat each day and see how many calories you're taking in. You can also track nutrients and other specific things, like I set mine up to track my fiber intake as well. It also has some features similar to MySpace and other social networking sites, so you can create a "Spark Page" and add people to your friends if you want extra support. It's fun and easy to track your weight and measurements with personalized tickers and graphs that show your progress. I'm halfway to my weight goal now, but I've also been able to get some great new recipes, ideas for workouts, and articles on health and fitness. Come get fit with me! :o)

Jesse, Laura, and Whitney

Hello, all! I thought it would be fun if everyone made an introduction post to the blog, so I'll start with myself and my family. I'm Laura, Larry's second-oldest. Here's me with my dad at my wedding in June '05.

Here's me with my husband, Jesse, when we were dating. I think we're headed to see Les Miserables in this pic.

This is our lovely daughter, Whitney, born Groundhog Day 2007.

Here's a shot of all six of Larry's kids:

Jesse & I moved to the Denver area last December, before Whitney was born, and we love it here, especially the opportunity to own our own home and live near his parents, who have been a great help. We're glad Whitney will be able to form a close relationship with her grandparents.

Jesse works at Lockheed Martin on the new space-thingy that's going to replace the space shuttle soon, which will go back to the moon and on to Mars. Maybe Whitney will be the astronaut who flies in it one day!

Jesse's very involved with Whitney; I like to call him SuperDad.

We love Jesus and are raising Whitney to love him too! I used to be a teacher, but I'm staying home with Whitney now and I love it. I'm also working on my portfolio because I want to be a children's book author/illustrator. Here's some stuff I've done lately:

That's all for now, but if this post turned out okay, I'm sure I'll be posting more soon. :o) Looking forward to reading everyone else's introductions, too!

Ok as I have never blogged before I am trying this out. Here's the family picture from 2007 minus Jim (who left for work), Bob and me who were trying to figure out the self-timer on the cameras.

For those who are just joining us

Well, for those who are just joining the blog, here are some tips:

1. You have to create a google account. If you already have one (from gmail or some other google program) you don't have to create one, you can just use that one. This is free, and easy to do.

2. Once you have accepted your invitation to the blog and set up a google account, you can post to this blog. You are an author. If you have suggestions on additions to the blog, please email them to me, or submit them in a comment since I am in charge of the site formatting.

3. Any registered user can comment on posts. Please do this so people know their posts are being read.

****Edit: I have been informed that it may be difficult to find the new post button. It is in the upper right hand corner. Click the link that says New Post and it will take you to a screen where you can start typing, add pictures, etc. Hope this helps!

4. You can post pictures, videos, or just write. This blog is for our family to keep in better contact and know what is going on in each others' lives. If you have announcements, ideas for family activities, or other things of that nature, you can post them here as well.

5. Once everyone has joined, I am wondering if people would want this blog left public, or made private. Private would allow only members of the blog to view the blog (I have chosen not to do this yet because I want all family members to see the blog even if they haven't signed up yet).

****6. If you have email addresses that I don't, please send them to me so I can invite everyone.
I think I got everyone, but if someone didn't get an invitation, that means I have an incorrect address for them.

7. I started a list of links on the right hand side of the page. I thought we might like to have a list of individual blogs and/or myspaces where people can see what you have there. I already added mine, but I didn't want to start listing everyones without approval, so if you would like your blog or whatever listed there, go ahead and add it (you should be able to do that) or let me know and I will add it. Make sure to send me the link if you want me to add it, that way I don't have to track it down.

Well, I guess that is it for now.

Back in Provo

Well, I have finally finished sending out invitations for everyone to join for whom I have email addresses. If anyone was missed, send me their email and I will invite them to join the blog. I hope that soon, many will join and start posting here. I don't have any family pictures to post, so please, those who took pictures at the reunion, send me copies so we can get some posted here for all to see.
As for me, I am back in Provo, just moving in to my apartment today. I thought I would take the opportunity to get the ball started on our new family project. Well, I hope everyone is doing great!

Welcome to the McGee Family Blog!

Welcome, I get to be the first to post on this new McGee family blog, the place where all our family can keep in touch with each other. The place where announcements for the whole family can be posted and where pictures can be shared. I hope everyone enjoys this blog and uses it!
